چکیده

An analysis of delamination for a thin elastic film, attached to a substrate a corner, is carried out. The film is in compression and the analysis is performed by combining results from fracture mechanics and the theory of thin shells. The results show a very strong dependency of the angle of the corner. In contrast with earlier results for delamination on a flat substrate, the present problem is not a bifurcation problem.

Mode Dependent Toughness and the Delamination of Compressed Thin Films

We consider the buckle-driven delamination of compressed thin lms. For a wide class of patterns of delamination, it is shown that the loading on the delamination front progressively goes from mode I to mode II during growth of the blister. As a result, the mode dependence of the lm/substrate interface excludes widespread delamination. This explains the observations of blisters of nite extent, w...

Stability of Straight Delamination Blisters

We consider the buckle-driven delamination of biaxially compressed thin films. Telephone-cord-like patterns observed in experiments are explained as a result of the buckling behavior of the film. We perform a stability analysis of a straight blister. A mechanism of instability causing undulations in an advancing finger of delamination is pointed out, which we claim to be the basic phenomenon ex...

Influence of Interfacial Delamination on Channel Cracking of Brittle Thin Films

Channeling cracks in low-k dielectrics have been observed to be a key reliability issue for advanced interconnects. The constraint effect of surrounding materials including stacked buffer layers has been studied. This paper analyzes the effect of interfacial delamination on the fracture condition of brittle thin films on elastic substrates. It is found that stable delamination along with the gr...

Elastic anisotropy effect on indentation-induced thin film interfacial delamination

Effect of elastic anisotropy on indentation-induced thin film interfacial delamination, especially, at the initiation and early growth stage, is examined. The indentation load is modeled as a constant pressure over an expanding semi-spherical cavity. The delamination process is approached by a cohesive zone model. The rest of the problem is formulated within the general anisotropic elasticity t...

Mode II Edge Delamination of Compressed Thin Films

Ceramic coatings deposited on metal substrates generally develop significant compressive stresses when cooled from the temperature at which they are processed as a result of thermal expansion mismatch. One of the main failure modes for these coatings is edge delamination. For an ideally brittle interface, the edge delamination of a compressed thin film involves mode II interface cracking. The c...
